All too often, clinicians only see and do what is within their scope or level of confidence and competence. If you can't do a treatment yourself, you tend not to talk about it with patients. Which can leave patients receiving less than optimal care.
The fact is... Independent practice is here.
OHTs, DHs and DTs have a professional obligation to recognise issues that are outside their own scope of practice and confidently communicate those issues to patients so they understand the importance of any referrals they're receiving.
The upcoming Recognise & Refer Online CPD Training Series is all about helping OHTs, DHs and DTs to take their adult examination skills to the next level, so you can confidently assist in the diagnosing and recognising of treatments, both inside and outside your own scope.
Build your skills examining adult patients and identifying their dental health needs that are both inside and outside of your own scope, so you can offer more comprehensive care to your patients and confidently refer them for further treatment when needed.
Be seen as a confident, knowledgeable expert by your patients, leaving them feeling like you've got their health and best interests always in mind.
Learn a lot of things you're not taught at university. Get real-world advice, tips, tricks and protocols around current best practice from industry-leading experts and specialists.
Maximise your ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary team and achieve great patient outcomes.

Dental radiology is the single most used tool in your diagnostic armoury. X-rays and cone beams show you things you simply can't detect with your eyes. But...
Reading and interpreting radiographs and scans isn't always easy. It's got a lot to do with your technique when the images are taken... can you recognise the difference between good and bad radiographs? And if there are problems with the scans, do you know how to identify the issues and correct them?
This two-part lecture series will focus on two different areas of extraoral dental radiology.
Part One: OPG/Ceph including indications and uses, proper technique, errors and troubleshooting, and a brief overview of image review.
Part Two: CBCT including a detailed discussion about radiation doses.
This session is going to be incredibly valuable as radiology impacts everything you do from diagnosing and recognising what treatments are needed, appropriate treatment planning, and also for pre-empting problems and directing discussions that you need to have with your patients.
A lot of dental specialists never worked as a dentist, but Dr Raahib did! He's got extensive knowledge and a solid real-world approach because he deeply understands how radiology is used every day within a practice.
Dr Raahib Dudhia completed his training in Dento-maxillofacial Radiology at The University of Queensland in 2008 and has extensive experience in private radiology practices in Queensland and NSW, reporting conventional dental radiographs as well as CBCT, CT and MRI scans.
A regular on the lecture circuit, Raahib presents throughout Australia, NZ and SE Asia. He is also the President-Elect of the recently formed AADMFR and has recently accepted a role as senior lecturer in Dental Radiology at UQ.
Raahib operates a specialised dental imaging practice in Brisbane called Dental Diagnostics. His services include an online Dental Radiology Consultancy, providing practitioners with imaging reports and protocol advice, as well as providing a second opinion on scans taken in medical imaging practices.
Raahib has had access to CBCT since 2006 and has seen the maturation of CBCT technology into a highly valuable diagnostic tool in dentistry and medicine. His practice has a special focus on low dose imaging and imaging for endodontics and trauma. A bit of a tech lover, he likes to keep up to date with new machines and CBCT viewers as they become available.
Oral medicine is all about early detection. Neoplasms and malignancies in the mouth have such a poor prognosis, and early detection is everything.
As one of the few health care providers that's regularly looking inside your patients' mouths, you have a responsibility to detect abnormalities as early as possible.
The reality is that different problems look different, and 50 Shades of Pink aims to help you understand what's normal and what's not.
What sort of things should you be looking at and thinking, "Oh no, that doesn't look right? Let's get a biopsy or refer to someone!"
A lot of patients complain of jaw pain. With increasing problems arising from long days sitting at desks, grinding and stressing, patients increasingly have questions around what they can do to fix their jaw pain.
This session is all about helping you better assess these problems in patients and refer them to the appropriate specialists.
Dr Amanda is a Perth Oral Medicine Specialist, PhD candidate, Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia, and Consultant at Perth Children’s Hospital.

Her other roles include Director of a not-for-profit Foundation focused on cancer research, and with Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Her interests include oral mucosal disease, orofacial pain, temporomandibular disorders, dental sleep medicine and paediatric oral medicine.
Part One: Periodontal Disease
Every dental practitioner involved in treating periodontal and peri-implant disease will have felt demoralised at some stage when the treatment they are providing isn't getting results.
There can even be a tendency to blame it all on poor patient compliance and oral hygiene, but this is rarely the answer.
This two-part lecture series aims to provide answers for these situations and provoke deeper thought about diagnosis and management of periodontitis and peri-implantitis.
In Part One, we'll be discussing issues related to natural teeth.
Dr Ed and Dr Tatiana are both specialist periodontists. They are passionate about treating periodontal disease and work closely with dental teams through shared care to achieve periodontal health for their patients. They're excellent team communicators with a real multidisciplinary approach, and David and Robyn have enjoyed collaborating with them for many years.
Dr Ed Ohlrich is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (Periodontology) and is passionate about evidence-based periodontal treatment.
He graduated from the University of Queensland in 2003 with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (Hons) and received a postgraduate scholarship at the University of Otago, qualifying with a Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry (Perio) in 2010.
This lecture will cover a range of critical areas including:
We're excited to have Dr Zeb McNamara bringing us this lecture! David and Robyn have worked closely with Zeb for many years now, providing shared care for patients and more recently having Zeb visit the practice for monthly consulting days. He's a brilliant Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon, and you'll learn a lot during this session.
Dr Zeb is a patient focused surgeon who practices the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery. He enjoys the wide spectrum of cases in the field ranging from dental extractions, dental implants, corrective jaw surgery, temporo-mandibular surgery to complex facial trauma.
He was born and raised in Queensland, and is happy that he had the opportunity, whilst growing up, to live both in the great south east and rural Queensland. During his university studies he received several accolades, including the George Christensen Memorial Prize for Oral Surgery.
Always keen to teach, he has held an associate lecturer position with the University of Queensland since 2010 and was promoted to a senior lecturer position in 2017. Dr McNamara believes that this role allows him the opportunity to guide the next generation of surgeons to the highest standard of patient care.
Since 2020, he has become Director of the Ipswich and West Moreton Hospital Oral and Maxillofacial Unit and Member of the Queensland Regional Surgical Committee which supervises Oral and Maxillofacial training in Queensland.
Throughout his career, Dr McNamara has had a keen interest in research, and has presented and published research both nationally and internationally.
Dr McNamara has branches in Brisbane CBD, Brookwater, Greenslopes, Upper Mt Gravatt, Chermside and Caboolture.
Orthodontic issues are a common concern that patients have, and this session is all about equipping you to accurately assess potential orthodontic needs and provide accurate information to patients when giving a referral about what they can expect.
For example, when are braces indicated? What sort of patients are more suitable for aligners? And when is ortho not a cosmetic procedure?
How do you address retention and relapse issues with patients, particularly if they have unrealistic expectations around how simple re-treatment might be?
Dr Paul Dever will also be discussing innovations in orthodontics, and the failures he's seeing from DIY aligners.
If you don't identify orthodontic problems in a child at the right age, it can increase the time it takes to treat them. And if left untreated altogether, can have lifelong implications for their oral health.
This session will include:
Dr Paul Dever is an experienced and well-regarded Orthodontist. He's passionate about sharing his knowledge and helping impact the lives of even more patients, many of whom are being led astray with DIY aligners.
Dr Paul received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Queensland in 2001 with majors in the fields of Biomedical Science and Developmental Biology.
He was then accepted into the Bachelor of Dentistry degree (University of Sydney) which he graduated from with honours in 2005, in addition to the Edmond Charles Gates Memorial Prize for Proficiency in Orthodontics.
In 2010, Dr Paul and his young family relocated to Melbourne so that Paul could commence a training position in the post-graduate orthodontic programme at the University of Melbourne.
Paul achieved his Membership from the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (MRACDS Ortho) and Membership from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (MOrth RCS Edin) in addition to his Doctor of Clinical Dentistry degree in Orthodontics (DCD Ortho), University of Melbourne in 2012.
Dr Paul Dever is a:
-Certified member of the Australian Orthodontic Board
-Registered member of the Dental Board of Australia (as Specialist Orthodontist)
-Member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists
-Member of the American Association of Orthodontists
-Member of the World Federation of Orthodontists
-Key Opinion Leader for Dentsply Sirona
-Member of the International Advisory Board for Dentsply Sirona (Orthodontics)
-Member of the Rotary Club of Bundaberg (Sunrise)
-Justice of the Peace (Qld)
Paul and his family moved to Bundaberg in Queensland in 2015, where he purchased Smiling Wide Orthodontics in 2016. He currently manages the principal practice in Bundaberg as well as branch practices in Hervey Bay and Maryborough.
In his spare time, Paul enjoys spending time with his young family, four-wheel driving, and watching all codes of football. He also likes motorsports and anything related to aviation.
It's every practitioner's worst nightmare: a patient walks in without any tooth pain, and after treatment it's sore! Too often, practitioner's freak out and freeze up, not quite knowing what to do or how to address the issue with the patient.
This session is all about giving you decision tree frameworks to logically work through the issue and identify what the issue might be, so you can create an appropriate treatment plan and referral pathway to address the issue.
This session will include:
Dr Ross Applegarth has over twenty-seven years of specialist experience with the Endodontic Group, joining soon after completing his Master of Endodontics at the University of Queensland. Prior to studying endodontics, Ross enjoyed eight years in general dentistry and travelled extensively throughout the United Kingdom and Europe.
Ross has held executive positions with the Australian Society of Endodontology at state and federal levels, serving as Federal President between 2005 and 2007.
Dr Ross has been involved with endodontic teaching programs at all Queensland dental schools, and lectured extensively throughout Queensland and internationally. He is currently involved in the undergraduate endodontic program at Griffith University.

In Part Two, we'll be discussing issues specifically related to dental implants.
Implants are very common now. There's so much information available to both patients and practitioners about how to care for implants. But how do you know when an implant is failing?
It's very hard to know simply by probing. And the stakes are too high to miss the signs. Even though you didn't place the implant, you are responsible for it now that it's there, and you must have the diagnostic tools and skills to identify when something is going wrong.
Dr Tatiana received a gold medal in Clinical Dentistry and is passionate about sharing her knowledge with others. She particularly enjoyed training students as a Clinical Instructor at the University of Otago.
Dr Tatiana received her Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Otago in 2008 and went on to receive her Doctorate of Clinical Dentistry (Perio).
This unique lecture offers an easy-to-follow and low capital outlay options for how OHTs/DHs and dental practices can work together to continue serving existing patients as they age and become unable to travel, and how to potentially grow your patient base as well.
We'll discuss oral manifestations in the ageing population and their impact on quality of life. As well as what the ageing population actually wants from a portable dental service.
Plus, Dr Mark will be diving deep into "how" to add portable aged care dentistry to your service offering, including logistics, fees, infection control and teledentistry.
This lecture will include:
Dr Mark Wotherspoon is an accomplished general dentist, founder, presenter and educator with 30 years of experience.
He's deeply passionate about aged care dentistry and sees a huge need for it in the community.
Dr Mark has held government service appointments as a Dental Officer in the remote Kimberley of Western Australia and Military Service in the Army Dental Corps. He is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at CSU and University Clinical Demonstrator.
Mark is the Founder of Dentist To Your Door, which specialises in portable dental services for Aged Care Facilities and Housebound residents.
There are only roughly 14 Specialist Special Needs Dentists (SND) in Australia and many private dental practices know very little about how to collaborate effectively with Special Needs Dentists.
This lecture is going to be incredibly insightful for how to best manage special needs patients you see in your own practice, as well as understanding the referral pathways when a patient cannot be treated in your own practice.
This lecture will include:
Dr David Fu is a Dental Specialist in Special Needs Dentistry. He graduated with his BDSc (UQ) in 2010 and completed his DClinDent(SND) in 2020.
Dr Fu has worked at various public and private clinics in Queensland and has been principal dentist at several Queensland Health dental clinics. Dr Fu is known to be a passionate advocate for patients with special needs and has experience in dental treatment under general anaesthetic, conscious sedation, as well treating patients in a hospital setting.
For several years Dr Fu has supervised dental students from both the University of Queensland and Griffith University. He has given lectures related to Special Needs Dentistry to undergraduates at the School of Dentistry, University of Queensland since 2018.
OHTs and hygienists are often the first to have discussions with patients about sleep and breathing issues because they just haven't thought to discuss it with other health professionals.
When they raise these issues, we cannot simply say "chat to your GP about it." It's our professional responsibility to address the issues our patients raise and provide them relevant, helpful information.
Considering patients with sleep apnea are at a higher risk of both heart attacks and strokes, it's crucial that preventive dental teams are armed with accurate information to discuss these issues with patients.
Damian is a holistic dentist with a focused interest in snoring, sleep disorders, teeth grinding, TMJ disorders and airway focused orthodontics. In his dentistry, Damian is passionate about looking “beyond the mouth” and treating the body as a whole.
He believes dentists play an important role in being able to recognise airway/breathing issues, sleeping problems, and craniofacial pain (such as headaches, neck pain, and TMJ disorders). This led him to undergo extensive postgraduate training with world renowned specialists in the field of sleep medicine and TMJ disorders, and achieving his Post Graduate Diploma in Dental Sleep Medicine with the University of Western Australia.
Damian also previously worked in Darwin’s first official TMJ & Sleep Therapy Centre, where he exclusively treated patients for snoring, sleep apnoea, teeth grinding and TMD.
Damian has setup his own specialised TMD and Sleep clinics: Melbourne Dental Sleep Clinic. Damian understands the value in working with skilled allied health practitioners outside of dentistry. He currently consults with the sleep respiratory physician team at Lung And Sleep Victoria, and the specialised TMJ physiotherapy team at the Melbourne TMJ & Facial Pain Centre.
He has presented lectures and held seminars to medical and dental professionals to spread the knowledge that dentists can help one’s health and quality of life “beyond the mouth.”
